How can I get fiber internet service installed

Fiber-optic internet can unlock a new world of high-speed performance for work, gaming, and more. So, how can you get fiber-optic internet service at your home? Let’s look at the fundamentals of fiber, including how it works and how to find a local fiber internet provider.

Understanding how fiber internet works

Fiber internet is a technology that connects your home to the internet, like the cable or DSL connections that most people use currently. However, the unique advantages of fiber come from the ways that it improves on these older technologies:

  • Fiber internet uses fiber-optic cable made from thousands of tiny woven strands of glass, rather than the copper-based coaxials that cable and DSL internet use. Data travels over fiber optic cables as ultra-fast light pulses instead of electromagnetic waves. This makes fiber connections faster and more reliable than cable or DSL and nearly immune to electrical interference.

  • The main internet “trunk lines” that bring digital data across states, continents, and oceans have been made from fiber-optic cable for decades. Unfortunately, creating “last mile” fiber connections directly into people’s homes and businesses has historically been costly, which is why most last mile connections today still use the slower but less expensive cable or DSL lines.

  • Fiber to the home (FTTH) has recently become an increasingly widespread option. Thanks to the nationwide expansion of fiber networks, more Americans than ever have the option of a home fiber connection.

Can I get fiber internet at my home?

Fiber connections can be installed in almost any home, so you don’t need to worry about whether your specific building is suitable for fiber. If a previous tenant or owner had a fiber connection installed, you might be able to use the existing connection hardware, but you’ll need to contact your internet service provider (ISP) to find out first.

Installing fiber is similar to installing traditional internet, although it can take longer. A technician will run a cable from a local fiber service line to your home and install an optical network terminal (ONT). The ONT fulfills a similar function as a modem, translating fiber-optic light pulses into a form your computer can understand. In many cases, the technician will need to bury the fiber cable underground, which can require several hours of work (sometimes in a separate visit). However, once a fiber connection is installed, it’s extremely reliable and low-maintenance.

Finding a local fiber provider

The easiest way to get started with fiber is to search for “fiber internet near me” or a similar phrase using a search engine. You’ll find ISPs that offer fiber internet in your area (if fiber is available), as well as sites that will let you compare different ISPs and what they offer. Enter your address on an ISP’s website to verify that their fiber services are available for your location.

Brightspeed offers high-speed, no-contract fiber service in hundreds of cities and towns — and we’re constantly expanding our reach. See if you can get fiber internet from Brightspeed:

Fiber isn’t available in my area. What now?

Unfortunately, fiber infrastructure still isn’t available in many parts of the US. Fortunately, most areas without fiber have other options for broadband internet, such as cable or DSL. It’s a good idea to regularly check whether fiber is available, though — independent ISPs like Brightspeed are constantly expanding fiber coverage, so it might be available for you soon.
